Practicing Yoga

Everyone can practice yoga—regardless of age, experience, flexibility, strength, ability or disability. At its core, yoga is a meditative practice that brings deep relaxation into the body and mind by way of proper breathing and body movements.

My private studio offers clients who are just getting started a place to learn, practice and ask questions without feeling self-conscious like can happen in a group class. For experienced practitioners, my studio provides a space to challenge yourself in a safe, supportive environment.

Traditionally, yoga postures (asanas) are meant to prepare the body to sit still for meditation. Nowadays, yoga isn’t commonly practiced as a prelude to meditation but more as a form of exercise and stretching or a simple way to move the body and feel good.  Either way, with a steady yoga practice you will deepen the mind-body connection. You will become aware of key muscle groups needed to support common day-to-day movements (like sitting, bending, breathing, squatting and walking) which reduces your risk of injury and pain in the body.

“Without the distractions of pain and tension you will move with greater ease, become more resilient to injury and, if approaching the poses as originally intended, be able to sit for meditation for longer periods of time (because the body will have less tension).”

A Proper Yoga (Asana) Practice Will Emphasize:

  • Safety through correct alignment and use of props

  • Building strength by holding correct posture in poses

  • Relaxing while in action (holding poses)

  • Efficient breathing patterns to enhance the mind-body connection

  • Engaging the body’s energy system to increase stamina

  • Stretching key muscles to help prevent injury and ease tension

  • Affirmations (practiced silently) to reinforce the expression of each pose

  • Adapting each pose to fit individual needs—regardless of ones’ ability or disability

Yoga poses can be integrated into your daily routine in as little as fifteen minutes. And your posture (while sitting, standing, exercising, driving….) will be much improved, which, in and of itself, prevents pain and injury.
